Moment’s Notice

The significant drawbacks—aside from the occasional near-drownings and lack of health insurance—in Todd Glaser’s line of work are few. Perhaps the only thing that qualifies it as a job is the requirement that he always remain on-call: California to Bali, Bali to Brisbane, Brisbane to Fiji, two days on Tavarua, back to Australia. Glaser’s photo essay on Kelly Slater, with well-rounded road notes, provides a unique look at the 11-time world champ.

Wali Kam!

Jess Ponting travels to Papua New Guinea and discovers the indigenous people evolved from surfing on wooden "splinter" boards to making their own boards after the introduction of modern surf technology by a traveling Australian pilot. They discover another community of surfers off the surfing map using no commercial surf products. All the boards were handmade from wood. Fin attachments and shape enhancements followed with the introduction in the 1980s of a surf magazine helped propel surfboard design.

The Curren Gun Project

Steve Pezman & Bob Beadle rode a big wave 11'4" made by Mr. Pat Curren during the Hawaiian winter season of 1962/63. A few decades later, Pezman & Beadle persuade Mr. Curren to craft a set of his signature big wave balsa boards.
