The Aquatic Ape
Miklos S. Dora, aka Miki Dora, aka Da Cat, aka The Black Knight, challenges surfers to a contest at Jeffrey's Bay. The rules: Entrants place a $200 reliability bond; applicants must construct their own equipment; equipment must be ozone friendly and biodegradable; no petrochemicals allowed; boards cannot exceed 9'6"; the tail must square off at 10"; single fins only; no logos of any kind; no colors; minimum board size is 8'. The winner will be the rider who rides farthest on a wave. Dora defines the point of the contest to be reclaiming the lost soul of surfing.

Three Southern California outdoor impressionist surfer-painters meet at San Onofre Surf Beach for a day of painting and surfing. Just as an accomplished surfer knows the ideal takeoff spot, so the “three amigos” migrate to the same vantage point above the beach to paint the scene in their own impression. This compare and contrast article photographs each of their finished works from that day, and also highlights each artist’s technique, brushstroke and palette with a high-resolution section of each work.
