Surfer/Artist Pat Tobins has led an enviable life. He was south of the border before Peterson and Naughton let the cat out of the bag and before Petacalco got all blocked up. He spent some time in Mexico, Hawaii and his native California with a surfboard(sometimes home made) and a paintbrush. Here he shares some of his experiences with us via beautiful paintings and some great anecdotes.

“Mikala Jones goes running right past us—board under his arm, sunscreen on his face. A photographer is setting up his 600mm. It’s fitting that we’re here in the Galapagos Islands, a place so important to Darwin’s formation of an evolutionary theory. Seals dart around in the lineup. Large lizards dominate the beach. Brutal sun beats down on jagged lava stone. It’s no Garden of Eden, but it’s not a bad place to originate a hypothesis of my own as I watch Mikala catch waves: Does a surfing life evolve or does it only contain the endless repetition of paddling back out?”

This continued documentary of “Tarzan”, Gene Smith, pioneer waterman and unsurpassed paddle-boarder, closes the chapter on a fighting man’s slow descent and return to a sanctuary in the California desert. From the tragic death of his mother at age 7, fighting and defending himself and his younger sister from the ravages of angry guardians and local street gangs to his self-imposed exile from society in the lumber camps of Oregon, he blazed a trail, ‘cruising for a bruising’ in the ‘30s that earned him the nickname “Tarzan”. Migrating to Hawaii from Southern California, he established himself as a pioneer waterman and a record holding marathon inter-island paddler, often unheralded and largely unsung, a loner on ocean and land.
